It seems Apple could just wait for Clovertown...

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/11/intel_clovertown/

which appears to be 2 Woodcrests on one processor. Could we see 8-Core Mac Pros' in 2007?

    arn

Oh, Kentsfield will as Conroe maybe not support duel processors, thereby disabling the opportunity of 8 cores? I c...;)

That's incredible! How can that be the case? Here it is 28 days paid days off if you work a normal 5 day week.

Welcome to America. Any regulation is called "socialism" here and painted as "Anti American". :(

Software will also have to keep up and unless your software becomes massively multithreaded and what you're doing can actually be multi threaded there's no real advantage to multi-core CPUs.

This is already a problem with Quicktime in that it doesn't scale past 2 cores. You'll find half of your computer under utilised for instance when transcoding video in Quicktime. Not if you transcode multiple files simultaneously - which is what I do with multiple instances of Toast 7 and Handbrake..

Plus that will probably be fixed in QuickTime 8 which is likely to come with Leopard.

Holiday season fast approaching...there's no way they will enter shopping season without a new iPod lineup. Period.

If they do, I'm dumping my stock.:p

And Appleinsider is sandbagging - hedging their bets that at least a portion of what they are reporting is true.

I kindly ask you to not put words in my mouth I've never written. I've never called you 'moron' or 'stupid' or using foul language about you. 'Keep your insults for yourself next time' is not a very kind thing to say, and I am actually wondering whether I should report you to the moderator.

I'm sorry, you're right, the other guy was saying we were "stupid", you were saying we were "addicts" for using a MBA to play games on. Much better and not insulting at all.

As for my own "Keep your insults to yourself", please do report it. I don't even see what is "not nice" about telling you to not insult people here. I am not an addict because I play Civilization on my MBA, no matter what you think about it.

Just remember I didn't report you and the other guy for both making fun of people who game on MBAs.

Cingular service in my area sucks. I've been a happy t-mobile customer for almost 5 years. I am already happy with my Samsung t-809, and still don't know how I feel about device convergence.

Pity they didn't slim down the iMac by choppin' the chin (assuming this rumor is true). Can't wait to see what they release. The old "smaller iMac" rumor priced for the "mass market" kept me interested in the next iMac update--hope to see something trimmed for the "mass market".

Figured iMacs would update in April.

Like the chin the way it is but I am hoping for the "mass market price point" iMac. If not, the 21" goes to the family room and I get a 27". :)

Now they just need to work on a little region of the world called... oh... everywhere outside the United States.

I do happen to have an account on the US iTunes store, and I availed myself last night of the free download of "Lost". While it wasn't a movie, it was still almost a gig (1.5 hours of video I suppose) and probably similar in size and quality to a movie.

On my DSL connection, it took about 7 hours. I let it go overnight.

Not quite the 30 minutes that Steve promised. :P

I am, however, starting to see why they allowed a sneak preview of iTV. Look how many of us are saying "I can't wait for iTV!" now that we've had some time to experiment with iTunes movie downloads!

You never OWNED any of this stuff. You owned the physical media, and you had an unlimited license to you. The technology is just clarifying this.

If you had actually owned it, you could have copied it as much as you wanted-- legally-- and resold the copies to others. You have been capable of doing this, but it was illegal; it also was difficult to enforce the law. Now the technology is actually starting to match your legal rights. It's actually wonderful. You are not losing anything you had legally, but the true owners (the content creators and the people who support them financially) can stop getting ripped off by criminals.

Not sure this will completely stop piracy, but it will further deter it. However if you can store it on a drive without any sort of DRM. This service will do nothing for piracy.

Photokina is a photo convention. Not a computer convention.

yes, and photo software runs on computers. "This is the new Aperture. and it will run beautifully on the new C2D Macbook Pro I just announced. Boom. does this... Boom, does that...etc..."

Let me see... wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya... high unemployment in the USA. Cost of energy is killing the average guy in the pocketbook. I know... lets spend our time getting those terrible DUI apps out of the app store... that way we can tell our Constituents what a great job we are doing representing them in Washington.

    PS

Don't forget to vote (them out).

Yeah just wait until tuesday when the whining starts because apple did not release new versions of everything and new products to make everyone and their grandmother happy. It happens every time.

That's what keeps me coming back! <evil grin>

This is most unfortunate. Now that TB is a reality, it would be far better if Intel just kills USB 3.0 completely as fast as possible. There is absolutely no advantage whatsoever in having USB survive past 2.0 at this point.

Sure there is. Higher speeds and backwards compatibility with older ports.

With 3.0 barely entering the market, there is no value in letting it get a foothold.

It's barely entered the market - on the mac. I'm rocking 6 usb 3 ports over here.

Sure there is. Higher speeds and backwards compatibility with older ports with no adapters.

It is pathetically obsolete compared to TB.

Compared to devices which nobody has which are not compatible with anything else? Compared to a next gen connector that is on one line of apple only products?

Thunderbolt is sweet, but nobody is using it yet and it is a unique connector. I smell another expensive adapter market coming...

What is with the comments about wanting USB 3.0 on Macs? What a huge waste of time and money

It's not expensive and whose time is it wasting? I mean other than people foaming at the mouth on forums.

Apple's walled garden policy doesn't bring security to end user or has failed at that. Just take a look at Storm8 apps (dev is sued / spy ware). However, it allows Apple to full fill its destiny of being the big brother like in their 1984 spot... wait, wasn't it meant to be the other way around... hell, just tell me who will be the girl with that sledge hammer cause I'm sure it ain't Apple...

Please! Let the Merom be overclockable in the next MBP or at least make it a CPU-swappable socket! If not, I may consider just getting a new Mac Pro that will be. Would hate to spend $3k on a new 17" with a stagnant (yet potent) CPU when every other Mac system out there will be overclockable or swappable. Any thoughts?

    B

Um. Most laptops are not overclockable or swappable. So you are asking a bit much there.

Also, Professionals don't overclock, children do. Buy accordingly.

Isn't a single TB bus capable of driving more than one display.... so can you drive two displays from a single port?

Might need a powered hub perhaps.. Dunno.

if you have marantz speakers...... you have 40 dollars.

True, but if you've just spent 450 on the receiver and another 100 or so on speakers you'd maybe resent having to shell out more for AirPlay.

What exactly was this patent for? Why doesn't it affect other players and music services besides iPod+iTunes?

I'm a Green Peace supporter, but with Bush in the Whitehouse, don't they have bigger fish to fry?

It took almost 20 posts before GWB was mentioned. It seems the attention span of some folks is actually getting longer.

    Now back on point, please.

The only reason GP is targeting Apple is because they think they actually have a shot at getting them to do something, and once Apple moves in response to GP, then they have ammo to go after the others.

GP is a dead movement - we need a fair, equitable organization to take its place.
