I'd have thought a sensible company like Apple would have released the phone unlocked, advertise it independantly, and let people work things out on their own, as well as providing it as a contract phone.

If Apple thought the music labels and movie studios were greedy and overcharged for their products, hoo hoo, they'd better get ready for the phone networks.

As Eidorian's link points out, Core Duo (Yonah) performance falls somewhere between the Athlon X2 3800 and the Athlon X2 4200. The 2.40GHz E6600, 2.66GHz E6700, and 2.93GHz X6800 Core 2 Duos in particular are at least 40% faster, which is exactly what Intel promised at the IDF.That's where I gauged it as well. The 1.86 GHz Conroe beats AMD's FX-62 in a few tests.

Hell the E6400 (2.13 GHz, $224) and the E6500 (2.4 GHz, $316) are more then enough to compete with the FX-62 (2.8 GHz, $999)

Unable to be a good corporate citizen, unable to satisfy their greed as they rake in more profits than the competition, Apples looking rather desperate. Nothing will ever be enough.

After having seen the actual claims, I don't think so. Apple was forced to do this. Notice there are quite a few trademark claims in there, relating to icon design, and trade dress claims.

The problem with Trademarks is that if Apple doesn't enforce them, they will lose them. As such, their hand is forced in this. However, just the trademark claims would make for one small suit and would make it so some of them might get thrown out. Enter the design patent claims to "pad" the lawsuit and to use as bargaining chips.

In the end, Apple may just drop the patent claims during settlement negotations and get awards for all their trademarks, which is probably what they are seeking.

What about the Mac Pro? It's way past due, would that come first, before the iMac?

Probably not until August at the earliest.

    $899 for the 13? A $400 price drop is a bit of stretch, don't you think? :D

For rotary hd, base version - may be $200 more for the 13.3 with SSD.

Remember that the pulse width is the reciprocal of frequency. At 4 GHz, the pulse width is 250 picoseconds. Light travels 0.000075 km in 250 picoseconds. There are 1 million mm in a km, hence light travels about 75mm in that time.

The size of the Core 2 chip is 143 square mm, or about 12mm x 12mm and getting smaller with each new process generation. At 4GHz, a single pulse can go back and forth across the chip at least 6 times.

In practice, propagation delays of this type are analyzed by CAD tools and the chip's physical layout is designed to minimize the signal path.

    that was just noise.

Either way I'll wait until the imac gets a desktop chip rather than a Laptop one.

I'm currently on Cingular and I'm not in love with my SE T637 all that much. I wonder what the price on this shiny new iPhone is going to be... If the syncing does not create duplicates in my Address book from the phone, I'll be very very happy.:)

Just read the licensing pdf posted in this thread.

The bold part of section 4 is what this is talking about. You can opt out of it collecting location data if you turn off location detection. It's collecting data based on you agreeing to it.

That may be true but Apple does have the reputation of being 'a cut above the rest' when it comes to video and graphics.

A family member has the new MBP 13" and I think it has a nice display. I have no idea how it is for gaming, but pics and videos look quite nice, IMHO. I've been of the opinion that Apple uses a better quality display panel than the other manufacturers, not necessarily stronger graphics performance but overall better looking.

The question was, "yeah, so what". How does this factor into this discussion?

The people who in this thread and the last imply that Microsoft has only ever used the term Program and should name their store as such. Turns out Apple weren't the only ones to use it. ;)

Even bigger screens? They're getting closer to replacing bedroom TV's now..

I don't believe they will get larger screens, they are almost too large for most cars when boxed as it is.

Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain!

    ...sorry, couldn't resist.:)

    you're quite welcome...

It'll be the fact that that is funny that keeps me in good spirits for the future.

"I'm not a fascist. I'm a priest. Fascists dress up in black and tell people what to do. Whereas priests... more drink?"
    Father Ted

Hopefully, (and it's what I'm clinging to) it's 'these islands' (Churchill) that'll finally make them ask what they did it all for. I believe we are immune as a group of people (assimilated though we be) because we'll always laugh in the face of adversity. History tells us that even if 'they' invade us they soon escape (or join up) because 'we' (who aren't aspiring fascists or fascist fodder) are content to treat political occupation as if it were one big joke.

    long may the Joke continue.

I'm surprised at all the Cingular hate here. At least in the D.C. area, the word is that they have the best coverage available - better than Verizon, who was the previous benchmark before the merger.

When I was in DC, my Cingular service was horrible. Just like it was in New York City, St. Louis and New Orleans (pre Katrina, when cell towers were still standing) and every other large city I've been in.

Yet, it works fine in the middle of nowhere. On my way down to New Orleans, I was on the phone in some tiny little town that couldn't have had more than 500 people. The only thing this place had was a gas station. I'm on my phone and call quality is excellent. An hour later in NO, dropped calls and low signal as usual. Or when I'm on the backroads in Missouri talking, again, perfect signal. Enter the STL city limits? Goodbye service.

Cingular has their priorities wrong. They go for the rural markets, where people don't want to have anything to do with cell phones, and they ignore the big cities. And if you try to call customer service to complain about the piss poor service, or to try to fix a billing error (which are common with Cingular) then you'll be on hold for half an hour, and get nowhere with their customer service rep who's over in India. They are the worst company we have ever dealt with, and will be leaving them the day our contract is up in December. IMO, Apple is making a huge mistake by being exclusive with Cingular.

Steve walks up to the stage holding a cobalt blue notebook. He opens it up and hits the power button. The audience is temporarily blinded by the brighness of the LED bulbs used to power the apple logo on the lid. (It will come in handy when you're lost in the wilderness and need to signal a passing aircraft.)

"It runs on core2duo. And the color is user customizable."

He then turns the notebook around so we can see the screen.

"It's running our newest universal product, Photoshop killa 1.0."

It's not really an original idea. Lala was doing this last year, until Apple bought them and shut them down.

Oh, I never knew much about lala so thanks.

The MBA looks bad as an ultraportable? L.O.L.

The MBP is for people who want a powerful notebook. People who want a laptop capable of using parts that equal 85-watts or higher.

I don't want a MacBook Air. I want a MacBook Pro without an optical drive that is slightly thinner than the current MacBook Pro.

If you think the only thing that separates the MacBook Air from the Pro is an optical drive then I'm wasting my time arguing with you. Clearly someone that thinks a 15" Zacate notebook with an optical drive makes a 15" MacBook Pro with a quad core 45 watt CPU and a 25W+ GPU without an optical drive look bad is someone that knows little about what they're talking about.

I don't see HP Envy owners complaining about their lack of an optical drive inside their machines nor do I see people knock that particular fact about the Envy.

So, ONE netbook which has an optical drive. Which makes the MBA look bad because it doesn't have one.

Actually, most netbooks make the MBA look bad because it doesn't have gigabit ethernet.

And a 15" Zacate which is not a notebook because the CPU is too weak, it's not a netbook, and it's not an ultraportable because it's too big would make an MBP without optical disk look bad because of the price, even if it has little reason to exist (unclassifiable in a bad way).
